The 5th International Forum for Water Sports & the Forum for High-Quality Development of the Rowing and Kayaking Sector in China was successfully held in WHSU

From December 15 to 17, the 5th International Forum for Water Sports & the Forum for High-Quality Development of the Rowing and Kayaking Sector in China with the theme of “empowering rowing and kayaking training with technology” was successfully held in WHSU.

Su Ke, Vice Director of the Water Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, Zhang Dan, Secretary General of Chinese Rowing Association, as well as the directors and vice directors of some other provincial sport administrations’ water sports management centers attended the opening ceremony.

In his opening speech, Zhu Lei, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC WHSU Committee and Vice President of WHSU warmly welcomed the leaders, experts, researchers and colleagues from all over the country, and gave a detailed introduction to the history and academic development of WHSU and its affiliated School of Competitive Sports. According to him, currently water sports have been developing fast both home and abroad; the application of technology to rowing and kayaking training is an urgent problem to be solved. He said his hope was to strengthen the communication and cooperation among different parties and promote the high-quality development of the rowing and kayaking sector in China through this forum focusing on the theme of empowering rowing and kayaking training with technology.


During the keynote session, Su Ke gave a speech titled “The Development of Water Sports.” Based on his work experience for years, he talked about the development of kayaking, rowing, finswimming, sailing and other water sports, and highlighted the importance of actively promoting the high-quality development of water sports in China, improving the integration of popularization among the youth and physical education, enhancing training of water sports athletes, and promoting the sustainable development of water sports.

Xu Weihong, Dean of the School of Competitive Sports, gave a speech titled “Inheritance, Development and Innovation: Thoughts on the High-Quality Development of China Water Sports Academy.” Based on the current situation of the Academy, he talked about its legacy and shared his vision of the future development of the Academy from three perspectives, which are inheritance, development and innovation.

In his speech titled “Innovation on How to Organize Winter Training for the National Team,” Thomas David, a coach of men’s rowing in the Chinese national rowing team analyzed the past and present, as well as problems and roadmaps for water sports in China, and gave visionary, feasible solutions and suggestion.

During the seminar session, the experts participating in the session had in-depth discussions about the theories and practice for the high-quality development of water sports, sharing ideas about the future development of various water sports. Chen Xiaoping, a distinguished professor from the China Institute of Sport Science (CISS) affiliated to the General Administration of Sport of China, gave a lecture titled “Load Management: Seeking the Mechanism Based on Scientific Evidence.” Professor Cao Chunmei from Tsinghua University gave a lecture titled “Chinese Female Rowers’ Sculling Competency.” Zi Wei, Associate Research Fellow from the China Institute of Sport Science (CISS) affiliated to the General Administration of Sport of China gave a lecture titled “Monitoring Rowing Training.” Ren Manying, Director of the Physical Training Research Center at Beijing Research Institute of Sports Science gave a lecture titled “New Training Methods for Strength and Power.” Luo Chen, Associate Research Fellow from the Physical Rehabilitation Center at the Training Bureau, the General Administration of Sport of China gave a lecture titled “Strength and Power Training for Rowers and Kayakers.” Associate Professor Wang Liming from the School of Sports and Health at Anhui University of Chinese Medicine gave a lecture titled “The Diagnosis and Prevention of Low Back Injuries in Rowers and Kayakers.”

The attendees of this forum were able to attend both online and on-site; over 400,000 viewers watched the forum in real time, and as many as over 500 articles were submitted to the forum offline. At the forum, leaders and authoritative experts from multiple disciplines, levels and fields gathered and gave their suggestion about the theme of “empowering rowing and kayaking training with technology.” The forum is not only an in-depth integration of theoretical exploration and practical results, but also an occasion where in-depth interdisciplinary cooperation has been achieved. It has enabled the further integration of expert wisdom and drivers of innovation for the high-quality development of water sports in China.
