The Scientific Research Department (works together with the Institute of Sports Science as one Department) is responsible for the construction of WHSU’s scientific research platforms, application and process management of scientific and technological projects, organization and declaration of rewards for scientific and technological achievements, management of intellectual property rights, the transformation of scientific achievements, coordination and organization of major scientific and technological projects, academic exchanges and cooperation, academic association work, and scientific research evaluation and statistics, etc.

WHSU has 12 key laboratories and key research bases (centers) at the provincial and ministerial levels, and 14 centers at the department and school levels. WHSU has participated in numerous projects of the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation research topics, the Olympic Games research topics, as well as provincial and ministerial key scientific research projects. The research results and achievements have won awards and obtained national invention patents, providing theoretical and technical support for both China and WHSU in achieving outstanding results in competitive sports.

Since the implementation of the 13th Five-Year Plan, WHSU has undertaken 62 national research projects, 351 provincial and ministerial research projects, and 272 non-governmental sponsored research projects, among which there are 4 major projects and 6 key projects of the National Social Science Foundation, and 8 National Science and Technology Support Program. It has won 26 provincial research achievement awards, including 1 first-class award, 10 second-class awards, and 21 national invention patents.
