From November 11 to 15, the 2024 National Fundamental Skills Competition for Physical Education Students was held in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. The representative team from Wuhan Sports University (WHSU) delivered an outstanding performance, clinching the first prize for the overall team score, along with three individual first prizes and seven individual second prizes.

The competition comprised four categories: fundamental theory (written examination), teaching skills (micro-lessons), sport-specific skills, and coaching skills. All participating students were required to compete in all four events. After intense competition, four members of the WHSU team showcased their solid foundational skills and exceptional performance under pressure, resulting in the overall first prize, in addition to three individual first prizes and seven individual second prizes.

Wang Haowen, an undergraduate gymnastics student from the 2021 cohort at the School of Physical Education, stood out by competing across multiple events and securing two individual first prizes. He noted, “In addition to the dedicated instruction from our teachers in class, the university and the school host annual competitions for students to improve their fundamental skills and provide numerous internship opportunities, which allow us to enhance our professional abilities comprehensively.”
Dai Yichuan, another undergraduate student from the 2021 cohort at the School of Physical Education, expressed, “The preparation for this competition was short and challenging, but the university arranged for experienced instructors to provide one-on-one professional guidance and psychological support, which helped us perform confidently.” He also excelled in the competition, winning one individual first prize and two second prizes.

The university places a high priority on preparation for the competition, establishing a coaching team led by Professor Wang Zhiqiang, Vice President and Standing Committee Member of the Party Committee of WHSU, with Peng Xiaowei, Dean of the School of Physical Education, as the group leader. The team included members Jiang Han, Dan Yanfang, Hu Lei, You Jia, Li Yanan, Ruan Zhiyang, and Ji Kai, along with a theoretical knowledge teaching team composed of teachers Ouyang Liuqing, Kou Xianjuan, Wang Ningqi, Liu Hui, and Zhu Jie. They developed a training program to enhance learning and practice, ensuring that the competition team was in optimal competitive condition.
A representative from the School of Physical Education remarked that this competition showcased the solid foundational skills and positive spirit of WHSU students, thoroughly testing the university’s educational standards and talent cultivation quality in physical education. It highlighted the teaching objective of the physical education program: “to cultivate students with solid foundational knowledge and skills, outstanding educational practice capabilities, and lifelong learning abilities.”

During the competition, Lyu Wangang, President and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of WHSU, provided on-site guidance and encouragement to all participating faculty and students, congratulating the team on their remarkable achievements. He urged everyone to continue striving for greater success, both in the arena and in life.

The competition was organized by the Department of Physical, Health and Arts Education of the Ministry of Education, featuring participation from 87 schools across 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities (with over 700 participants including team leaders, coaches, and athletes). This event achieved comprehensive regional and institutional representation, serving as a significant review, exchange, and showcase for national physical education programs. It brought together experienced experts and outstanding students in the field, creating an essential platform for interaction among teachers and students in higher education physical education programs, as well as showcasing overall quality, professional proficiency, and innovative practical abilities on a national stage.
